Russell Springmann, an assistant to Rick Barnes with the Texas basketball team, interviewed Saturday for the head coaching position at Virginia Commonwealth, according to a source close to the Longhorn program.
The job came open when Anthony Grant left last week to become head coach at Alabama.
Springmann, 39, started at Texas as an administrative assistant in 1998. He was promoted to assistant coach in 2001.
Springmann was the point man in the recruitment of Kevin Durant, D.J. Augustin, Damion James and Jordan Hamilton, the latter a highly regarded incoming freshman next season.
