TOWSON, Md. -- Virginia Commonwealth University had Eric Maynor and an interior job, and that was enough to overcome some late-game sloppiness as the Rams held on to beat Towson 78-71 in a Colonial Athletic Association game last night.

VCU (5-1, 12-5) built a 14-point lead with 3:21 left, then sweated out the final few minutes as the margin dissolved with missed foul shots and turnovers.

Towson (2-4, 7-11) got within four twice in the final minute. But Joey Rodriguez hit five of six foul shots to give the Rams some breathing room.

Maynor scored 27 points and had nine assists. His complement was continued inside production from 6-10 Larry Sanders and 6-8 Kirill Pishchalnikov.

Sanders had 13 points and 10 rebounds, marking his fourth double-double in the past six games. Sanders is averaging 14.7 points and 10.2 rebounds during that span.

Pishchalnikov had 12 points and seven rebounds.

VCU took a 37-32 lead in a ragged first half. The Rams had a 25-18 cushion behind Sanders (eight points) and Pishchalnikov (six), but the Tigers used some turnovers by VCU to catch up.

Maynor began getting in the lane against Towson's zone and also hit a pair of 3-pointers as the Rams finished the half with a 10-5 run.

VCU had eight turnovers in the first half and finished with 14. Towson had 11, including seven in eight possessions, and finished with 16.

The Rams, who have won four consecutive games, are 15-1 against Towson all-time.
