Jeff Lebo has popped up on Virginia Commonwealth's initial list for a new basketball coach, but Auburn officials said Saturday that VCU has not contacted the school seeking permission to talk to its basketball coach.
The Richmond Dispatch said Saturday that VCU Athletics Director Norwood Teague indicated that Lebo was on his initial list of candidates to replace Anthony Grant, who was hired by Alabama on Friday.
Teague and Lebo know each other: They were students together at North Carolina in the 1980s.
Efforts to reach Lebo on Saturday were unsuccessful.
The Richmond newspaper also said Teague's initial list includes VCU assistant coach Tony Pujol, Florida assistant Shaka Smart and Texas assistant Russell Springmann.
Teague plans to interview Springmann in Texas and Smart in Florida.
Teague said he hopes to have a new coach by Thursday.
