Virginia Commonwealth Athletic Director Norwood Teague said Auburn's Jeff Lebo is one of four candidates he wants to approach about becoming VCU's next head coach, according to this report in the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Former VCU coach Anthony Grant will be formally introduced as the new coach at Alabama today.

Teague said VCU assistant Tony Pujol, Florida assistant Shaka Smart and Texas assistant Russell Springmann are also on his initial list.

I'm trying to get a comment from Lebo or Auburn, but it's still relatively early on a Saturday.

Lebo is 80-76 in five years at Auburn. His contract runs through 2013 and has a mutual buyout clause. If Lebo left for another job and Auburn decided to enforce the clause, Lebo would owe $375,000 for every year remaining on the contract, or at least $1.5 million. Under the contract, the buyout would only be waived if Lebo were hired as head coach or head-coach-in-waiting at North Carolina, his alma mater.

Lebo made at least $785,000 this year according to the most recent copy of his contract provided to the Press-Register. The Times-Dispatch said Grant made $700,000 at VCU. He will reportedly make in the neighborhood of $2 million annually at Alabama.

UPDATE: Teague and Lebo have a UNC connection. Teague is a 1988 graduate of Carolina and had two stints in the Chapel Hill athletic department. Lebo, of course, played for the Tarheels from 1986-1989 and still maintains strong ties to the Carolina family.
